LGBTQ 50+ Services & Activities
The LGBTQ 50+ Alliance enriches the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQ) people who are 50 and older. In collaboration with the Madison Senior Center, OutReach offers an array of free and low-cost social, educational, and support services for successful aging of all LGBTQ 50+ individuals.
Many LGBTQ older adults remain in or are forced back into the closet. Often they are isolated and depressed. We offer services to the 50+ population providing a safe, enriching environment.
In addition to helping LGBTQ 50+ individuals build community and support networks, we provide information and referral to existing LGBTQ-friendly 50+ service providers, including those offering affordable housing, access to benefits, home health support, bereavement, isolation and loneliness, as well as mental health, legal, or economic concerns.
The LGBTQ 50+ population embodies a wealth of knowledge and experience. The LGBTQ50+ Alliance helps make this strength available to members and to the greater community.
Helping the LGBTQ 50+ Population Build Connections
Studies have shown that LGBTQ 50+ individuals who have reliable social supports report a higher quality of life. They experience lower levels of depression, anxiety, and minority stress.
In many ways the challenges of finding and maintaining social support differ for LGBTQ 50+ people from those of their heterosexual peers. Due to family and social rejection and lifelong stigma the LGBTQ50+ population is:
• Twice as likely to live alone
• Half as likely to have a life partner or spouse
• Twice as likely to have no close relatives to call for help
• Four times less likely to have adult children to help them.
LGBTQ 50+ Alliance programs offer solutions that break isolation, build friendships, and build connections!
